Frankly these two boys are quite talented.
Not only two of them have performed a song that usually required five white boys with ear pieces, their soundtrack did not skip like Milli Vanilli's during 1990 Grammy Awards.
The duo's name is called 后舍男生 or in English "Back Dormitory Boys". Their spoof music videos have been selected by Motorola China to promote mobile phones.
The Back Dorm Boys are 韦炜 (Wei Wei, height 189 cm or 6'2") and 黄艺馨 (Huang Yi Xin, height 173 cm or 5'8"). They are university students at 广州美术学院 (Guangzhou Arts Institute) majoring in Scupltures.
The third dorm mate in the background is 肖静 (Xiao Jing) and in most of the videos he was playing the computer game "Counter Strike". Here are more info and pictures of them for those who are interested.

I love it when Chinese artists do covers of English songs...like Faye Wong doing the cranberries. This was the first time I've heard the cover these guys are lip-synching to. It was done in English by David Usher and called 'black black heart'...anyone know who the Chinese musician is?

The particular one that was featured in Back Dorm Boy's video (one wearing yellow tee, the other in white ringer tee, girlfriend calls to complain about been neglected, he hangs up and continue to jam) was an edited version for Motorola China to promote their E398 mobile phone.

I saw these guys on Sunrise, Channel 7, Brisbane, Australia and fell in love with them. I think they are hilarious and what a passion they have for really bad american music! Their facial expressions are priceless, such angst! The guy sitting in the background on his lonesome ignoring the antics of these fellas just adds to the hilarity. Two thumbs up for these guys!

These two remind me of two Argentinean singer/humorists called Pablo and Pachu, who were in the VideoMatch show for years, though the Argentinean ones are about 20 years older. The short Chinese, the guy on the left, he makes faces just like Pablo does. In fact, one of the most funny things Pablo and Pachu ever did was mock the Backstreet boys! What a coincidence. Anyhow, I like these Chinise guys, they really rock, very talented, and very funny. Wanna see more of them.

ReplyDeleteI think part of it is the guys have no shame whatsoever- and why should you? After they use this for the cell phone commercials- they'll be laughing all the way to the bank.
Secondly- I as an American sometimes feel as though (as im sure many other people do) American culture sometimes has a habit of making celebrities out of people that really dont have any talent. I find it hilarious that this video kind of gives BSB a kick in the ass with the video- like "Anybody can lip sync to a pop song, make faces, and still make money and become a star".
Maybe we should get rid of the American bsb and embrace the much more entertaining Asian BSB!

Great post Tian. I actually saw a clip of these guys on the news here in NY. I thought they were hysterical. It's amazing how something so mundane can find it's way across the internet and into thousands, if not millions, of peoples computers. I've even heard that people are starting to sedn clips of these guys around. I'm glad they were at least able to cash in on some of this in China.

Regarding the earlier comment about the ebaumsworld.com "Annoying Asians" clip of two boys lipsyncing to an Asian pop tune -- I believe the boys in that clip are speaking and singing in Korean, so I don't think it's an early glimpse of the Back Dormitory Boys. Anyway, Lord knows the BDB weren't the first to come up with this idea, but it's interesting how Google Video made them an international phenomenon.

Holey Crap! This is the funniest thing I've ever seen. Someone should definitely get them some tv air time because every person I've showed this to rolls on to the floor laughing.

Haha, such great fun! But yet, I wonder how they get to finish any work in that university of theirs; practising and coordinating their movements takes a lot of time.
ReplyDeleteThey're really transformed when they are serious, and when they are trying to be funny. Or, at least, the first one is (I'm quite sorry, I forgot his name ^^;).
Also, the bloopers were funny, but I couldn't make out most of the comments. Which is sad, being chinese myself, but charaters are as foreign to me as the concept of a black hole. I had to have my other friend, who's taking level three chinese,(I'm only taking measley level one) to translate, and even then she can't do it!
But I would really appreitciate if anyone could point out where one might be able to locate "Travel Separately" by Renee Liu, because I've tried just about everything....and nothing worked. (Mainly because the directions are IN chinese).
Also, I wonder if they can speak or reconise English? Probably not, but it's not for the lack of trying. For some reason, we've always wondered that, and I just had to ask.

ReplyDeleteI, too, have been watching them daily! Their songs stuck in my head like superglue. Never knew two lip sync boys could hold such power. Funny I was the one who never find Jim Carie funny? News articles described Back Dorm Boys humour down-to-earth, non-exaggerated and right to the point. I guess they really hit the right spot. XD

ReplyDeleteWe're here in The US and we LOVE them...they're GONNA go far.some of our friends asked what they were smoking and we realized that they probably must be... but, you know, they are still good. They actually kind of remind us of our little threesome. pyrofairy in the back perfectly calm probably wondering why she's our roomate, rose on the left being insane, and devin on the right making as many weird faces as she can.

I've seen the Backstreet Boys ones before a while back, but the Chinese ones are hilarious! My favorite, without a doubt, is the brief blurb of S.H.E. - Superstar. It's absolutely hilarious to see the one guy eating Instant Noodles in between jamming to the song.

Hello Tian. Over in Europe we are falling off our chairs at these two guys. They are TOTALLY talented and seriously into their performance. We love the guy on the left because he is soooo into the songs and we love the way the guy on the right twists his mouth when he sings. They should have their own show and indeed their own fanclub website. Any takers??
